STHT 506 - GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS

Homework Assignment#1 (Final Submission)

Requirement:

(a) Explore the Common Spatial Data Infrastructure (https://portal.csdi.gov.hk/geoportal/) and download spatial data from there. Use 4 or more layers in your QGIS program for visual display. This is your own thematic map.

(b) Write (within 300 words) about your observation of the datasets of this website and evaluate their usefulness for future GIS projects.

ANSWER - PART (a)

Fig. 1 shows the locations of the 41 campsites and related camp facilities (like locations of visitor centers, viewing points, water filling stations, barbecue sites, toilets as well as mountain bike trailers) in country parks in Hong Kong. By using this data file, we can create a map for campsites fans to get all these information of facilities for further decision making.

ANSWER - PART (b)

The usefulness of these datasets for future GIS projects can be evaluated based on several factors:

Variety of Spatial Data: The website appears to offer a diverse range of spatial data, covering different aspects of Hong Kong's urban landscape, which can be valuable for a wide array of GIS projects.

Accessibility: The availability of data on a public platform facilitates easy access for researchers, professionals, and the public, which is crucial for conducting GIS analyses and projects.

Integration Potential: The datasets seem to originate from multi-source spatial data, which suggests the potential for integration and combination with other spatial data sources to enhance the depth and breadth of GIS projects

Smart City Development Support: The CSDI is explicitly developed to support smart city development in Hong Kong, implying that the datasets may align well with contemporary urban planning and development-related GIS projects.

In conclusion, the datasets available on the "https://portal.csdi.gov.hk/geoportal/" website seem to offer a rich and varied collection of spatial data with the potential to be highly useful for a wide range of future GIS projects, particularly those focused on urban planning, smart city development, and geographic analyses in the context of Hong Kong.
